Goal # 5 – Improve academic achievement through site-based educational reform  [Element 5]

Objective 5.1

Foster emotional and social success thereby promoting improved academic achievement.

Performance Indicators:

5.1.1        By June 2008, there will be a 15% increase in aggregate state-mandated test score data as measured against 2004 – 05 aggregate test score data. Element 5 Outcome Indicator

5.1.2        By June 2008, there will be 5% higher graduation rate as compared to the 2004-

05 school system data. Element 5 Outcome Indicator

5.1.3        By June 2008, there will be a 5% higher attendance rate reported across the

school systems as compared to the 2004 – 05 school system data.

5.1.4        By June 2006, provide comprehensive services to students suspended or expelled to alternative schools. Element 5 Process Indicator

Objective 5.2

Improve the connection between school and community.

Performance Indicators:

5.2.1        By June 2008, there will be 15% increase in parent involvement in school and

community activities as measured by the 2004 – 05 school system data.

5.2.2        By June 2008, at least 20 community groups will have been trained on the Search

Institute’s Asset-Building Resources.  Element 5 Process Indicator

5.2.3        By June 2008, individual, school-wide or system-wide grants will be submitted that address some of the Search Institute’s 40 Development Assets.  Element 5 Process Indicator

Strategies/Interventions to Achieve Goal # 5 [Element 5]:

• Provide mentoring and tutorial services for low-performing students on state-mandated achievement tests during school hours and in after-school programs both on campus and at various community locations.
• Integrate computer and/or web-based instructional programs for low-performing students.
• Involve more parents in school and community activities.
• Introduce Search Institute’s Asset-Building Resources to targeted school personnel and various community groups.

• Provide training on Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets.
• Identify specific assets from the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets that teachers or other school staff would use in improving student emotional/social learning leading to academic achievement.
• Conduct training sessions for school personnel, community grant partners, and interested community residents on Search Institute’s framework of Developmental Assets, financial literacy and racial equality.
• Expand current and add new computer and/or web-based instructional programs such as:
  • Nova Net
  • Plato
  • Success Maker
• Expand connection between community [parents seeking regular high school diploma] and REACH adult high school.
• Implement a Truancy Prevention Program.
